20-plus seats of AutoDesk products is a lot more work that you would think! We have a different Engineering & Design manager, and it's super helpful that our management team understands the difference between those task domains. We don't have a big drafting and engineering department compared to a lot of shops, but having a CAD & Drafting Manager has been an important part of maximizing the productivity and efficiency of the drafting side of things. Again, small parts of real projects help with getting going, abstract applications are most useful with a lot of prior knowledge. The latest hire has worked out OK so far, but has a stick-to-it problem that will be familiar to those hiring folks in their 20's. Productively, but coordination is a 3D task, and he's never going to get that. Way better result than a SolidWorks guy that is now only doing 2D CAD. We hired a former pool contractor who was familiar with all the trades that pools require (A LOT!), and re-skilling him with AutoCAD and Revit has been a home run. We'll do that again, I'm sure - it was very positively received. The only formal classroom style training has been done in-house, we had six engineering notebooks setup in a conference room for five or six sessions back in 2019, for example. They get started with small parts of projects, get a lot of feedback and support, and where their skillset grows them to, they get to do LOTS of it. My CAD Manager has done a good job of identifying people with potential and a good attitude.
